I am Shashi Bala, a housewife from Canada. I got married in 1974 to Mr. Gopal Sharma, Retd. from Indian Railway. I am a mother of 3 children, I have 8 grandchildren. All are settled in Canada.
World Class Beauty Queens: Please tell us about your education.
I am a graduate from Delhi University and completed Master of Arts in English from Agra University.
World Class Beauty Queens: What does women Empowerment means to you?
Women Empowerment for me means that every woman should be bold, educated and should take part in all the activities, regardless of her age, because age is just a number and at any stage of life woman can achieve a lot.
World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about your pageant history.
I saw an advertisement on Facebook page and applied for the same. I got a call from the team and my audition was scheduled. I got selected as a finalist for Mrs India International Queen 2021. My pageant journey was so wonderful. Everything was so well organized. Mrs. Ankita Saroha, Director of Mrs India International Queen was with us throughout the journey.
World Class Beauty Queens: What inspired you to do your first pageant?
I have joined so many Senior Citizen club in India. In Delhi there is a Senior Citizen club which is coordinated by Mrs. Kiran she usually organizes programs time to time from there only I got inspiration.
World Class Beauty Queens: Why did you choose to compete for your current title?
From very beginning I wanted to go pageants but now I got the opportunity to I fulfil my dream. I was here to get name and fame in my family, friends, and society.
World Class Beauty Queens: To those unfamiliar with your pageant system please tell us what is it about?
Mrs India International Queen is a platform create a role model for the world with a motto “BE STRONG, BE CONFIDENT, BE YOU!!” This platform is meant to showcase your talent, live your dreams and inspire others as well. The platform encourages women empowerment and promotes Indian culture. The pageant is divided into two categories – Mrs Category (Age: 21 years to 39 years) and Classic Mrs (Age 40 years and above). There is no limitation for height and weight as it believes every women are beautiful in every way.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are you being judged on during the competition?
The contestants are judged on their catwalk, poses, turns. To win the pageant it also very necessary to focus on each and every round which were performed during the finals. There was Introduction round, Talent round where we have to gain good marks along with that question-and-answer round was also important. Judges judged our confidence, smile, etiquettes and intelligence too.
World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about your experience during the competition.
My experience during this competition was so good. I learned a lot from this competition. It was bit difficult for me to manage everything specifically in this pandemic. But I came India only to achieve my goals. It was a wonderful journey.
World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about your platform or what cause do you volunteer for.
I would be very happy to help handicap people in their daily chores. I would also love to volunteer senior citizen with whatever is required and to encourage them to achieve their dreams. Also, I want to take care of animals.
World Class Beauty Queens: What appearances have you done with your title?
Firstly, when I came back to Canada after winning the show my Family welcomed me with garland. I told them about the pageant and my journey how I worked to achieve the title. I have appeared on social media with my crown and title.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are some of your achievements?
I am a proud grandmother of 8 grandchildren, they are the one who always motivated me to do everything. I was in sports in school and college. I represented my school and college in volleyball, throwball, high jump and long jump. I also participated in Ramleela. I have got many achievements in Punjab Kesari’s Senior Citizens Club.
World Class Beauty Queens: What makes you stand out from all those other beautiful girls?
I was so amazed with the contestants who all came to compete for the crown. Everyone was so beautiful and intelligent. I think I focused on each and every detailing and tips which were given by our Director and Choreographer. I was dedicated and alert during the show. I also focused on Question-and-answer round along with costumes. I kept smiling throughout my journey, I think all this makes me stand different.
World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about the moment your name was called out as the winner.
I was so shocked when my name was called. I achieved pageant title in this age and my dream was fulfilled. All my hard work was paid off when my name was called. I would like to thank you to Director, jury panel and choreographer. I have won everything now.
World Class Beauty Queens: What does it mean to you to be a Beauty Queen?
It feels so good and gives satisfaction as well. I feel proud of myself that when people think of getting retired from their work and dreams as well at that age, I achieved something that was not so easy to achieve. I am very happy.
World Class Beauty Queens: How did competing in pageants helped your life?
After competing in pageant, I have seen different version of mine. I am happy and enjoying the life with gratitude, I got more love and respect from people. I think my journey to winning the title has inspired many.
World Class Beauty Queens: How did pageants helped your self esteem and body image?
I learned a lot from pageant and transformed myself. I have worked hard in preparing different rounds for the competition which has helped me to be more poised and confident. I am polished and now shining all over the world.
World Class Beauty Queens: You are an inspiration to all the girls out there. How does it feel?
It makes me feel very happy that now I am an inspiration to my daughter and daughter in laws. I have always motivated them to be positive, to focus more on yourself than others and stop comparing.
World Class Beauty Queens: What is your on stage strategy to win the judges over?
I gave my best on the stage and in all the rounds. The way we got the instructions, we followed accordingly. I was well prepared and kept smiling throughout although we were so tired.
World Class Beauty Queens: How did you prepare for your competition?
I started expressing myself, keeping an eye contact. I made introduction videos and practiced them in front of mirror. I prepared well for Interview round. Also, I prepared for my talent round and practiced a lot. I chose my dresses wisely.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are your tips for learning better pageant walk?
Walk with relax position, how you move your hips while walking, how you to take turn and pose. Make sure that you practice to be confident on stage.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are your tips for choosing right pageant dress?
If you are below 45 years then you can wear any outfit in which you are comfortable but if you are above 45 years then you must choose the fabric, colour very closely which will show decency and you will be more comfortable.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are your tips for winning interview?
Thanks to Mrs India International Queen team, they guide us very well. I think answers should be precise and honest, keeping an eye contact is important with a smile on face. Also, I was very confident throughout the journey.
World Class Beauty Queens: What is one mistake that you've done during competing you wish you could redo and fix it?
Most of the time I was walking in speed on stage then I realized that I am making a mistake. I was watching myself that there should not be any exposure.
World Class Beauty Queens: What other mistakes are made by girls during the contest?
I have seen common mistakes that they were comparing themselves with fellow contestants. I believe they should be more focused on being who they are and try to be more real.
World Class Beauty Queens: Any modeling or acting experience?
I have some of experience as I am connected Senior citizen club so they arrange the programs. I did one of the pageants in Dubai and won prize of Rs.5000. I also participated in WBTR (World Book Talent Record) they organize online modelling, and performances on any of the occasion.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are your plans for 2022 as a Queen?
There is temple near to our home, there will be a get together on occasion of Holi, festival of colours. I am going to share my experience of my journey and will also encourage the people to take initiative for pageants and achieve their dreams.
World Class Beauty Queens: What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?
I want to be remembered as an inspiration and for my authenticity. My family members said that I have taken a bold step in this Corona pandemic. Everyone should remember me how positive attitude I kept and achieved my dream in this age as well.
