World Class Beauty Queens: Please tell us about yourself.

I’m a graduate of Fairmont State University where I earned two degrees in Family Consumer Science and Early Childhood Development. I taught sixth grade health, physical education, and theology at Charleston Catholic High School for six years. During that time I also was the varsity cheerleading coach and organized many community outreach projects for after school activities. I’m now a stay at home mom to my two daughters Mia and Arya and just recently started my mobile spray tanning business “Custom Spray Tans by Kari”. I tan clients for any event but specialize in pageant tanning. My husband and I have been married for nine years, and both were born and raised in West Virginia and love spending time outdoors.

World Class Beauty Queens: What does women Empowerment means to you?

Women empowerment means to be you, be different, and to take a stand for what you believe in. Women can do anything they set their heart and minds to and pageants are a great way to showcase that. As women, we need to learn to build up and motivate each other, instead of tearing each other down.

World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about your pageant history.

I have been involved in pageants for over twenty-eight years, from my first local festival pageant when I was six to now being a Mrs. contestant. I have held local festival, state, and national titles in my many years of pageantry. Not only have I been a contestant but I also enjoy judging and directing and I now run my own charity pageant every year that supports different charities in WV and supports our Military Service Members.

World Class Beauty Queens: What inspired you to do your first pageant?

What pushed me to do my first Mrs. pageant was moving to a new area and wanting to make meaningful connections with others who shared my same interests. This also game me a platform to show others my passion for volunteering and educate people on the importance of being involved too.

World Class Beauty Queens: Why did you choose to compete for your current title?

I competed in the Captivating Pageant system a few years ago and had a great experience. It was important for me for find a pageant that would allow me to be myself and not be pushed to conform. The Captivating System staff is very professional, transparent, and works hard to bring out the best in all contestants.

World Class Beauty Queens: To those unfamiliar with your pageant system please tell us what is it about?

It’s about being captivating in your community, and empowering women to be themselves, be different, to be whatever they want to be. On the Captivating website it states “The winners may not necessarily score highest in any one particular category, but will do well in all events. They will be women who possess the entire package of poise, personality, intelligence and beauty. They should understand that along with the prizes and glamour, there comes a responsibility to their state, their school, the pageant system, sponsors, and most important, to themselves.  They automatically and instantly become role models.” This will be the pageants 10th anniversary and has a new hashtag to use. #beyou #bedifferent #becaptiviting

World Class Beauty Queens: What are you being judged on during the competition?

Captivating has five categories you are judged on. Personal interview, Captivating Fashion wear, fitness wear, evening gown, and on-stage question. The Captivating Fashion wear is a different theme every year and each division has a fun theme to get creative and really let your personality and uniqueness shine. It’s one of the most unique events of the pageant.

World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about your experience during the competition.

My experience was wonderful and empowering. From the start of the weekend with the Captivating Awards Red Carpet Party to the end of the pageant I enjoyed every minute. The staff and national queens are all very helpful with anything you ask. However, the time that stood out most to me was rehearsals. This is a time to get to know the other contestants and perfect your walk on the unique stage. Something I feel the Captivating System has is an amazing and professional stage production. The stage made me feel confident and allowed me to showcase my personal style.

World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about your platform or what cause do you volunteer for.

My platform is volunteerism, which to some might seem cliché. Throughout my years of teaching, coaching, pageantry and doing community outreach I have been able to connect with many different organizations and charities. All of them are making a meaningful impact in their community and the world around them. Picking just one seemed unfair to me because I have seen so many programs that are doing wonderful work. My goal is to educate others on the different options they have for volunteering and show them that no matter what they choose, giving their time is the most valuable donation they can give. I work with schools, community clubs, and sports teams by doing workshops on what they are interested in and showing them the key to getting others involved in volunteering is to get them to connect emotionally with something they feel they can realistically make a difference.

World Class Beauty Queens: What appearances have you done with your title?

I have been invited to do my workshops for over 20 different organizations this year and have many more scheduled for the upcoming year. I have also emceed pageants, ridden in parades, and had a local television news station run a story on my donation drives for Operation Gratitude. One of my favorite appearances was speaking at the West Virginia Wesleyan Service Scholars meeting about Operation Gratitude and why it’s important to honor our Military men and women.

World Class Beauty Queens: What are some of your achievements?

· Community Spirt Award for Relay for Life in Charleston WV.

· 2017 Ms. West Virginia American Royal Beauties

· 2017  National Ms. American Royal Beauties Queen

· 2018 Mrs. WV Timber and Wood Day Queen

· 2019 Campaign Chair for the United Way of Gilmer, Lewis, and Upshur.

World Class Beauty Queens: What is you’re on stage strategy to win the judges over?

It is simply to have fun on stage and let my personality shine through. The judges can see if you’re having fun on stage or faking it. I make sure to be in the moment and take my time to show them why I would make a title holder.

World Class Beauty Queens: What makes you stand out from all those other beautiful girls?

My ability to be different and not worry about trying to be like everyone else. I believe you need to be yourself and be confident with everything you do at a pageant.

World Class Beauty Queens: What does it mean to you to be a Beauty Queen?

A Beauty Queen is someone who is disciplined, has determination, consistency, and courage to stand up for what she believes in. She is someone who is reliable in everything she commits to and knows she is not only representing herself but the title she has won.

World Class Beauty Queens: How did competing in pageants helped your life?

Pageants has taught me to perform under pressure, be prepared, and never give up no matter the odds. I got my first job over many qualified applicants because of the confidence that pageants have instilled in me and my ability to know the do and don’ts of interviewing.

World Class Beauty Queens: How did pageants helped your selfesteem and body image?

As a mom, a positive body image is not always easy to have. Pageants give me a push to stay healthy and active in my everyday life. I find that Mrs Contestant’s are some of the most uplifting people you will ever meet. We all know we have imperfections but that’s what makes us perfectly imperfect. We cannot compare ourselves to others but we need to set our own standards of what we should be. Pageants has helped me come to this conclusion and has made me learn to love what God gave me.

World Class Beauty Queens: You are an inspiration to all the girls out there. How does it feel?

Like a dream job! My goal has always been to inspire others to be the best version of themselves. Now that I have my own two girls that look up to me, that responability is one that I take with great respect and pride. Always remember that you never know who is watching or listing so always be kind and be true to yourself.

World Class Beauty Queens: What are your tips for learning better pageant walk?

One of the best learning tools you can have is a video from your last pageant. Watching your walk on stage under pressure can be an extremely valuable learning tool. I also suggest getting a walking coach. You and your coach can decide what changes can be made and then practice until it become second nature. Next time you are on stage apply the changes and watch the video to see what worked and what didn’t.

World Class Beauty Queens: What are your tips for choosing right pageant dress?

Knowing what colors looks best on you is very important. I know for me, red is a color that really stands out on stage. My suggestion is going to your favorite dress shop and try on every color you can. Choose a color that not only compliments your features but make you feel like a queen.

World Class Beauty Queens: What are your tips for winning interview?

My number one tip is knowing what your pageant system is looking for in a new title holder and knowing everything you can about that pageant. This includes what that pageant stands for, past queen(s), and what qualities they are looking for in a future title holder. Other important factors are having a solid platform that you believe in and a plan to let the judges know what you will do if you win. Lastly, be yourself and have fun. It’s why we do what we do and you should enjoy it.

World Class Beauty Queens: How did you prepare for your competition?

I prepared by staying active, working with my pageant coach, and finding the right wardrobe. I also maintain a healthy diet by meal prepping and make sure to stay up to date on all current events. Something I feel is very important, is to be a brand ambassador for your system. You need to let others see what you have been doing and why it’s so important. Social media plays a big role in pageants today and it’s important to share keep others up to date on your platform.

World Class Beauty Queens: What is one mistake that you've done during competing you wish you could redo and fix it?

I once had to do a thirty second commercial on stage to describe myself. I froze on stage and it definitely didn’t go as planned. I was upset and let this affect me in other areas of competition. If I could go back, I would tell myself to move on and show the judges how resilient I can be when rebounding back from a mistake.

World Class Beauty Queens: What other mistakes are made by girls during the contest?

I think one of the most common pageant mistakes is to not do your research about the title you are running for. When I’m helping others prepare for a pageant, I always make sure they know everything they can about the pageant and title they are wanting to represent.

World Class Beauty Queens: What are your plans for 2019 as a Queen?

So far I have hosted over 20 different workshops on my platform this year. I want to continue working with groups who want to be actively involved in their communities and find volunteer opportunities they are passionate about. By the end of my year, I would like to host 50 or more workshops and keep volunteering with groups like the United Way and Operation Gratitude. I want to showcase as many local and national charities as possible on social media to help them get the attention they deserve.

World Class Beauty Queens: What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?

I want people to remember me as the queen who made the most of her time during her year and reached her goals no matter what obstacles were encountered. As a Mrs., I want others to see that we are never too old to try something new and pageants can be something that brings your family closer together.
