World Class Beauty Queens: Please tell us about yourself.

As a child of working-class immigrants, I understand the importance of having a strong work ethic and a positive mindset. I am in the process of competing my undergraduate degree at the University of British Columbia (UBC) with hopes of pursuing a professional degree in the near future. I am actively involved in student activities on campus and I regularly look for opportunities to have meaningful discussions about social issues. I view life as a a continuous learning experience.

World Class Beauty Queens: What does women empowerment mean to you?

Women's empowerment means having the appropriate tools, knowledge and opportunities that are necessary to make life-determining decisions. Empowered women learn from their mistakes and use their voices to build up those around them. When women are empowered as individuals they strengthen the building blocks of society.

World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about your pageant history.

This is the first pageant that I have competed in!

World Class Beauty Queens: What inspired you to do your first pageant?

The talk surrounding pageantry has always been intriguing, considering the different stereotypes associated with the competition. I entered my first pageant to have first-hand experience trying something out of my comfort zone. I wanted to form my own opinions from an informed perspective.

World Class Beauty Queens: Why did you choose to compete for your current title?

The Miss BC Pageant emphasized community, confidence and charity - all of which resonated with my personal values. I viewed this pageant as a unique opportunity to promote mentoring relationships for young women and to encourage youth to take more active roles in their communities. Having seen the work done by previous titleholders, I knew that having a platform would enable me to demonstrate my serious commitment to helping others.

World Class Beauty Queens: To those unfamiliar with your pageant system please tell us what is it about.

The Miss BC Pageant recognizes titleholders for their accomplishments, talents and community service. Contestants receive training ranging from modelling and choreography, to leadership and self-defence which helps them to develop transferable life skills. The program has a special emphasis on charity work and the contestants have raise approximately $400,000 CAD for the pageant's charity of choice, Cops for Cancer.

World Class Beauty Queens: What are you being judged on during the competition?

During the competition, I was evaluated on my personal presentation in both sports wear and an evening gown. There was also a private interview with the judging panel, an on-stage final interview and an optional talent show. Furthermore, some contestants received titles that recognized their fundraising efforts for the Canadian Cancer Society.

World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about your experience during the competition.

It was a remarkable! I met an array of extraordinary women and I was fortunate enough to have made many friends along the way. I was warmly welcomed and I created many noteworthy memories. The pageant coordinators were very supportive and I was inspired by their dedication to empowering women from all walks of life.

World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about your platform or what cause do you volunteer for.

Encountering the right mentor at the right time has been a life-changing experience for me, as it has contributed to making me the woman that I am today. For that reason, I elected to be the Mentorship Chair for a student-run club at UBC. This allows me to facilitate mentoring relationships between students and established professionals from across Canada. Additionally, I have supported women who were re-entering the workforce when I interned at a women's resource centre. As part of my reign, I also volunteer as a Cultural Connections Mentor for a non-profit organization that aims to assist newcomers to Canada. My mission is to actively support those who are striving to achieve their personal and professional goals.

World Class Beauty Queens: What appearances have you done with your title?

I have the privilege of volunteering on behalf of many organizations including: the Terry Fox Foundation, Secret Lantern Society, Make-A-Wish Foundation Canada and Variety the Children's Charity. From parades to meeting with public figures, I view every appearance as a way to better serve my community and draw attention to worthy causes. Some of my favourite memories have involved making genuine connections with people from all corners of British Columbia.

World Class Beauty Queens: What are some of your achievements?

I began my reign with the intention of proactively seizing opportunities to promote my community. In addition to my volunteer work, I am proud to have won awards for my public speaking and debate skills. I have since completed several professional development courses in areas ranging from data analytics to addressing discrimination in the workplace.

World Class Beauty Queens: What makes you stand out from all those other beautiful girls?

Through my previous work in the community, I have a unique platform with clearly defined goals. I strive to bring an elevated sense of passion and purpose to any project that I undertake. On a personal level, I have made an effort to know my strengths and weaknesses as a contestant.

World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about the moment your name was called out as the winner.

It was an exciting moment! I had come into the pageant looking to meet new people and to highlight causes that I cared about. Winning the crown was the cherry on top.

World Class Beauty Queens: What does it mean to you to be a Beauty Queen?

Being a titleholder means being responsible for the platform that has so graciously been bestowed upon me. I see my title as a way to bring attention to worthy causes and as a way to address various social issues. I want to continue being an engaged community member and set a positive example for the next generation of young women.

World Class Beauty Queens: How did competing in pageants help your life?

It taught me that there are benefits to stepping outside your comfort zone. When we are challenged in an unfamiliar way, it enables us to come to terms with who we really are. As a result of this pageant, I have been able to participate in several philanthropic activities that I would have never known about otherwise.

World Class Beauty Queens: How did pageants help your self-esteem and body image?

Every pageant is different in their approach to self-esteem and body image. I was lucky enough to be part of a program that focuses on promoting beauty in all of its different forms both inside and out. I came away from the pageant feeling confident, beautiful and pampered.

World Class Beauty Queens: You are an inspiration to all the girls out there. How does it feel?

It is an honour. Young girls need to know that they are valued, supported and that they have the power to change their communities. I want to be part of the movement that teaches girls to navigate conflict and to own their successes so that they can become great future leaders.

World Class Beauty Queens: What is your on stage strategy to win the judges over?

Have fun and enjoy the moment! It is important to showcase not only your beauty, but your femininity and unique personality.

World Class Beauty Queens: How did you prepare for your competition?

It was helpful to start by analyzing what my priorities were and what I had hoped to take away from the experience. Eating a well-balanced diet, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep prior to the competition prepared me for the rigorous pageant training schedule. I also planned my outfits and accessories ahead of time so that I could avoid feeling overwhelmed later. During the competition, I made sure to stay hydrated and practised my dance routines whenever I had a spare moment.

World Class Beauty Queens: What are your tips for learning better pageant walk?

Select shoes that are comfortable and that fit well. Like with anything, practice makes perfect! Do not be afraid to ask family, friends and pageant coaches for feedback. Remember that the final walk is your moment - so own it!

World Class Beauty Queens: What are your tips for choosing right pageant dress?

Choose a dress that highlights your personality and one that you feel confident in. Have a general sense of what compliments your body type and skin tone. The objective is to demonstrate your poise, confidence and grace.

World Class Beauty Queens: What are your tips for a winning interview?

Be true to who you are and come into the interview with the right mindset. Focus on refining your answers so that they are clear and concise. Most importantly, your sincerity is what makes your inner beauty truly shine!

World Class Beauty Queens: What is one mistake that you've done during the competition that you wish you could redo and fix it?

At one point, I found myself being caught up in the hustle of the pageant experience. Knowing what I know now, I would take a step back and try to live in the moment more. After all, the event goes by pretty fast!

World Class Beauty Queens: What other mistakes are made by girls during the contest?

With so many accomplished people all in one place, it is easy to start comparing yourself to others. The key is to understand that we are all on a unique path and that there is more than one way to reach the same goal. Celebrate what makes you different and take this chance to learn more about the charity work that your fellow contestants are doing.

World Class Beauty Queens: Any modeling or acting experience?

Aside from a few fashion shows and some theatre production shows in high school, I do not have any modelling or acting experience. However, I am open to the idea!

World Class Beauty Queens: What are your plans for 2020 as a Queen?

I have plans to continue supporting the organizations that I was involved with prior to winning my title. I want to expand my charitable initiatives and continue meeting with leaders and changemakers in my community. On a personal level, I look forward to completing my degree and moving on to the next chapter in my life.

World Class Beauty Queens: What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?

Our legacy is closely connected to the relationships that we have cultivated. As a mentor and advocate, I seek to devote my time in service to those around me. As a titleholder, I want my reign to have symbolized a constructive force for positive change and an openness to new ideas.
