World Class Beauty Queens: Please tell us about yourself.

I identify myself as a young Dreamer who is attending as a full-time honors student at Northern New Mexico College with a full-time job, and as a full-time role model. I am the first in my family to attend college and Like any other graduate of high school. I wanted to attend an out of state college and because of my status that was not possible whatsoever. I realized no matter where I study, I had to obtain my education and achieve my personal and educational goals. NNMC opened their doors and opportunities for me and my future. Attending NNMC is one of the best decisions I ever made. My educational goal is to become an immigration lawyer. In 2 years, I will be receiving my bachelor’s degree in Psychology and will be attending law school. With my law degree, I plan to help my immigrant community and those who need true affordable legal representation. For the past 6 years I have been an activist in my community and working with national youth led organizations that focus on immigration issues that relate to DACA recipients. Although, my goals have not been easy to achieve because of my status I have developed amazing skills throughout my experiences that have helped push my immense passion for my aspirations. I was born with dreams of becoming a successful immigration lawyer to help all those in need and I know that If I keep my strong mindset, there will be nothing that can stop me from achieving it. I will make this dream a true reality. So, you can say I am a Dreamer.

World Class Beauty Queens: What does women empowerment mean to you?

The way I view women empowerment is strong independent women who pursue education in careers that support other women rights. Women Empowerment is a support system between women who accept and stand up for each other’s opinions and views.

World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about your pageant history.

I am new to the pageant world, but so far, I am loving it. I have always had an interest in Modeling and all the glam it included. A year ago, from today, I couldn't have imagine holding and representing such an important title while doing one of the things I love the most, which is influencing the importance of our rights and culture as women and Latin people.

World Class Beauty Queens: What inspired you to do your first pageant?

My personal platform and interest in modeling influenced me to do my first pageant. Once I knew what this pageant offered, I had to give it a try although I had no experience in modeling, I was comfortable enough to know I was prepared to challenge myself with this new experience. I knew Miss New Mexico Latina had to be my first pageant since I felt the connection with it. Miss New Mexico Latina has had outstanding reviews on the platform they offer, and I had to give it a try and gain as much experience from it. I am so honored to represent all Latinos in the beautiful state of New Mexico!

World Class Beauty Queens: Why did you choose to compete for your current title?

As I previously stated, my current title Is my first title. Although modeling has always been an interest, I did not have in mind to run for a pageant without any modeling experience, nor to compete for such an important title in such a short amount of time. My current director contacted me and convinced me about there being no need in experience and that my platform was good enough to give the pageant world a try. What comforted me was that the majority of what was judged on during competition would be gained throughout the two days of practice and orientation. It would be a great obtained experience, so why not give it a shot and make the best from it. I am the first in my whole family to model and belong to the pageant world, so, everything was new for everyone, Although I did receive the best support system from my family and friends which played a huge role in my decision. It was one of the best decisions of my life!

World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about the moment your name was called out as the winner.

Whenever I get asked this question, I can’t help but get emotional. As only having a two-day modeling experience in a prestigious beauty pageant or any pageant overall, I was very nervous, but one of the greatest things I remember is that I gave it my all from the beginning to end, I was enjoying the moment and being myself. My father has been my biggest supporter with my aspirations and all I could remember that day was what he had told me,” Mija, you got this. You will win this My Queen. Just continue being yourself.” When the judges started naming, I told myself that I had come a long way and no matter my placement I was extremely proud of myself. Most names were being called, not mine, so that meant I had to move up and hold hands with my runner up, while being in shock. Moment of silence, I can still hear my loved ones cheering for me. In a matter of Seconds, my name was called as the new Miss New Mexico Latina 2018! I was extremely shocked and emotional, but very thankful. It was Father’s Day and my father was my biggest supporter, so you can say I will always remember the gigantic hug filled with lots of emotion, when I told him “Happy Father’s Day Dad, I love you paps.” Definitely, a memorable moment in my life and have grown in many great and positive ways. I have come a long way ever since my modeling journey started.

I believe a real beauty Queen is more than beauty, but a person of substance and strength to follow their passions and goals.

World Class Beauty Queens: How did pageants help your self-esteem and body image?

Pageants have helped me maintain a steady and confident image. I have gradually built confidence within myself and by being recognized for my opinions and thoughts. Growing Up I struggled with my body by believing I was too thin. Overtime I slowly learned to love and understand how to care for my body. Within the years, I was introduced to sports, fitness, and healthy eating and living.

World Class Beauty Queens: You are an inspiration to all the girls out there, how does it feel?

Knowing I am an influence on other young women makes me appreciate the huge responsibility of being a role model and always being my best self. Making good decisions and being aware that everything I do improves the lives of other young girls.

World Class Beauty Queens: What are your tips for learning better pageant walk?

Confidence! Practice! Confidence! Practice! Good posture, book on head while walking

experiment, and there’s many great modeling videos on YouTube (Can't forget the catwalk).

World Class Beauty Queens: What are your tips for choosing the right pageant dress?

Choosing the appropriate dress that sends positive messages, although feeling comfortable and confident! Model it like you know how!

World Class Beauty Queens: What are your tips for a winning interview?

Being yourself, honest, direct, good eye contact and posture. Genuine passion towards platform, practice interviewing by preparing with others and developing individual thoughts.

World Class Beauty Queens: How did you prepare for your competition?

I prepared for competition by talking to family, friends, and research the experiences of other pageant contestants. Developed internal conversation with myself as to why I am doing this and what my impact would be on others. It’s more than a beauty contest, it takes genuine passion towards platform.

What is one mistake that you've done during competing you wish you could redo

and fix it?

Besides breaking a flower clip for my hair for state and stressfully looking for one, I Never competed in pageants, was very new to pageant world and prepared in a short amount of time. Don't even know what mistakes made but I know I learned and continue learning step by step.

World Class Beauty Queens: What other mistakes are made by girls during the contest?

Girls can focus on external beauty than internal. May not be there for the right reasons or a platform that sends a misdirected message, and not enjoying the moment.

World Class Beauty Queens: Any modeling or acting experience?

No previous, only current modeling experience. (My drama movie acting experiences does not count).

World Class Beauty Queens: What are your plans for 2019 as a Queen?

My plan is to continue appearing in different venues where I can explain the importance of my platform. Aspire to Inspire as many people with the confidence needed to stand up for themselves and others, to help and positively influence each other, express how other young Latinos have many opportunities through education, and finally to keep preparing for future pageants.

What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?

I would like to be remembered as an inspirational Dreamer, as I identify myself and many other Latinos with aspirations, who don’t give up no matter the difficult circumstances. Giving a shot at new positive things of interest, enjoying fully, and making the best of every experience. I want to be remembered as the Miss New Mexico Latina 2018, that everyday throughout her reign, she woke up with a goal for the day to work towards her platform. The platform that was well known throughout the beautiful state of New Mexico and maybe other states. The land of our true enchantment and understanding. Genuinely aspiring to inspire throughout her whole reign as your Miss New Mexico Latina 2018.
