World Class Beauty Queens: Please tell us about yourself.
I'm a new year's baby born on new year's eve. I was born and raised in the Welsh capital Cardiff, which is in Wales, part of the UK. I believe in living life to the full.
World Class Beauty Queens: What does women Empowerment means to you?
Empowerment to me means to be true to myself and support other women to be their best.
World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about your pageant history.
My first pageant was Miss Fashion Vs Beauty in October 2015, representing Cardiff where I didn't place. In November 2015 I entered the regional heat Miss South Wales Inspiration representing Cardiff in the Ms category. I won the regional heat as Ms South Wales Inspiration 2015 and Ms Charity Woman leading to Miss Inspiration UK in April 2016 as a free placement. I won Miss Publicity and Miss Inspiration Charity Woman 2016.
My 4th pageant was Miss Beauty UK in November 2016. I won best hair, Miss Publicity and Miss Beauty UK Charity Woman 2016. Then I returned to Miss Beauty UK in January 2018. I placed 1st runner up and won Miss Inspirational Beauty UK 2018/2019. Finally, I thought I'd give Miss Beauty UK a third and final shot in May 2019. I won Charity Elegant Woman and Spokesmodel Elegant Woman and I took away the title Miss Beauty UK Elegant Woman 2019/2020.
World Class Beauty Queens: What inspired you to do your first pageant?
I wanted to be a role model for women my age that think competing in a pageant is only for younger women or girls. I want to be seen as an example of no matter of age, disability or race, opportunities can be presented in life at any time.
World Class Beauty Queens: Why did you choose to compete for your current title?
Miss Beauty UK looks for more than on stage work but appearances and charity work, so I entered in 2016. After I experienced what Miss Beauty UK was like I just wanted to go back to the same pageant as I never felt like I was part of a family as a finalist till I was a Miss Beauty UK national queen. I couldn’t ask for anymore in a pageant system as my director and sister queens are so supportive.
World Class Beauty Queens: To those unfamiliar with your pageant system please tell us what is it about?
Miss Beauty UK supports mental health and hardship, alongside looking after our planet. Our linked charitable organisation provides help and support for those struggling with mental health or/and hardship - by advocacy and donating items to help the service user move forward with less stress and strain through volunteers and donations from the public and the MBUK family. We collect items through the public, Great Minds Pathway and Miss Beauty UK to lower things going into landfills and support charitable organisations and causes throughout the entire world. The items are milk bottle tops, used bras and new underwear, wedding, bridesmaid and prom dresses, used stamps, ring pull, pet food pouches, crisp packets, furniture, clothes, toys, homeless items, personal cleaning products, household cleaning products and broken, used or new jewellery.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are you being judged on during the competition?
Miss Beauty UK judges the work put into a title and most of the points are gained before the final. Each finalist will be asked for a portfolio showing all appearances, community work and fundraising for the chosen charity. Points are also gained on introduction, camouflage round, eco round and evening wear.
World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about your experience during the competition.
It was an experience I will cherish forever and all the contestants I competed with were amazing. Getting to meet women and girls with different disabilities and passionate about their platforms was a positive experience.
World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about your platform or what cause do you volunteer for.
I was diagnosed with autism at 3 years old and I'd like to inspire individuals on the spectrum to never give up on their dreams. Also mental health can be more common for people on the spectrum. I'd like to fight against related forms of discrimination, empowering individuals and transform communities.
World Class Beauty Queens: What appearances have you done with your title?
I recently volunteered in a charity fashion show for victims of domestic violence. In December 2019 I attended Miss World in London. I also support a lot of online campaigns on my Facebook page Miss Beauty UK Elegant Woman 2029/2020 - Carla Zayas.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are some of your achievements?
I have worked full time in education for nearly 12 years. Statistics show only about 16% people on the autism spectrum, can cope in full time employment. One of my other greatest achievements is learning how to drive. After five attempts I finally passed my test. I now have 13 years driving experience.
World Class Beauty Queens: What makes you stand out from all those other beautiful girls?
I have a good heart that shines through my personality. Also, I believe I’m a great example to anyone on the autism spectrum and/or suffering with mental health not to give up on their dreams!
World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about the moment your name was called out as the winner.
I was shocked and burst into tears. I was very happy that my hard worked paid off, after competing in Miss Beauty UK for the third time.
World Class Beauty Queens: What does it mean to you to be a Beauty Queen?
My title comes with great honour and achievement. It shows dedication and commitment really pays off. With my title I support and raise awareness for things that are important to me such as autism awareness and mental health awareness.
World Class Beauty Queens: How did competing in pageants helped your life?
Pageants has improved my confidence and I believe that anything is possible if you try. I have met a lot of people through pageants from all walks of life and made new friends.
World Class Beauty Queens: How did pageants helped your self-esteem and body image?
Pageants cheer on women all shapes and sizes. This makes me feel confident and comfortable.
World Class Beauty Queens: You are an inspiration to all the girls out there. How does it feel?
I feel grateful and honoured whenever someone recognises the work and effort, I put into making a difference. I believe anything possible if you try.
World Class Beauty Queens: What is your on stage strategy to win the judges over?
Be yourself and enjoy the opportunity. Show who you are on stage.
World Class Beauty Queens: How did you prepare for your competition?
For the UK final I raised money for the chosen charity Great Minds Pathway along with making appearances around my local community with my finalist sash. I attended coaching sessions and practiced a lot.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are your tips for learning better pageant walk?
Practice makes perfect. I practice in all of my outfits and heels before competing.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are your tips for choosing right pageant dress?
The dress needs to be something that makes you feel comfortable to wear and a colour that makes you stand out. If you don’t feel comfortable, your confidence will not show through.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are your tips for winning interview?
Interviews improve with practice. Listen carefully to all questions and think before speaking. Answer questions with confidence and don't go on for too long.
World Class Beauty Queens: What is one mistake that you've done during competing you wish you could redo and fix it?
Nerves often get the better of me during the walk. I had a lot of personal coaching on myself and finding what works best for me. As a result I feel calm and confident.
World Class Beauty Queens: What other mistakes are made by girls during the contest?
Other common mistakes I often notice are not practicing enough walking in heels and not practicing speaking on stage.
World Class Beauty Queens: Any modelling or acting experience?
Yes, I have volunteered in charity fashion shows a few times.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are your plans for 2020 as a Queen?
I plan to raise as much awareness as possible and attend as many pageants events as I can in the UK.
World Class Beauty Queens: What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?
I hope people will remember me for inspiriting them. One day I want someone to look at me and say you inspired me never to give up, I kept trying and chased my dreams!
