World Class Beauty Queens: Please tell us about yourself.
Armed with a degree in Food Science and Nutrition, this Australian graduate had a vision to advocate healthy living by eating right and by indulging in wholesome foods and a balanced diet. I’m fortunate to have met my husband who shares the same vision and thus established a healthcare company providing health screenings and giving expert nutritional advices.
World Class Beauty Queens: What does women Empowerment means to you?
The famous Kimora Lee Simmons once said, “Anything a man can do, a woman can do better … with stilettos.” So I believe whenever a woman puts her determination and mind towards achieving something, that’s empowerment in itself.
World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about your pageant history.
This is my first time competing in a pageant. So the whole experience itself was nerve-wrecking but at the same time life-changing. The experience was exuberating and I intend to continue competing and see how far I can go.
World Class Beauty Queens: What inspired you to do your first pageant?
I’ve always been inspired by the ladies who compete in beauty pageants for their courage and stage presence. But I wouldn’t have done it if not for the encouragement from my mother. She has been my biggest supporter throughout the journey and she inspires me to live my dreams of becoming beauty queen. My other biggest inspiration is my beauty queen mentor, Datin Maylene Yong. She has coached me everything from poise to catwalk, speech to confidence.
World Class Beauty Queens: Why did you choose to compete for your current title?
I chose to compete in Mrs Malaysia Tourism Queen International is because they accept candidates from all walks of life. Born in a country with multiracial backgrounds, many of the beauty pageants here specifically cater for ladies in certain languages and it may be difficult for me as it is not in my mother tongue. Mrs Malaysia Tourism Queen International also promotes Malaysian history and culture, a topic which I love to share.
World Class Beauty Queens: To those unfamiliar with your pageant system please tell us what is it about?
This competition is open to all married women and is divided into 2 categories: 21-45 years old and women from 46 years old onwards. Only the former age group can advance to the top 5 and overall a total of 15 subsidiary titles were given out.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are you being judged on during the competition?
All candidates are judged on 3 different aspects for Mrs Malaysia Tourism Queen International,
1. Self introduction in the Malaysian national language donned in the national costume, baju kebaya
2. Individual talent which showcases Malaysia’s art and culture
3. Evening gown
World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about your experience during the competition.
My biggest obstacle that I had to overcome for this competition was my stage fright. Throughout my life, I’ve always been the person who handles the back end, never the one who faces audience. I thought I would fail miserably during the self-introduction and cat walk but surprisingly many commented I did well. It was not only a relief but it shows that practice and hard work pays off!
World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about your platform or what cause do you volunteer for.
Glitterama Ladies Charity Group is a very unique brand of people who come together in fellowship to perform in the name of charity. It was formed in July 2006 with Datin Maylene Yong presiding over it. Today, this charity group mainly focuses on singing for charity, raising funds to help the underprivileged children, elderly and animal shelters, regardless of race, religion, status or orientation.
World Class Beauty Queens: What appearances have you done with your title?
Since winning the Mrs Elegance title, I’ve graced events to give support to their cause, walked the red carpet and singing for charity.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are some of your achievements?
I was ecstatic when I was chosen as the Top 500 beauty queens in the country, since winning the title. It was such a deep honour to be recognized as such and I was conferred the Goodwill Ambassador by the honourable, Puan Sri Susan Cheah, chairlady of the Good Heart Foundation during their Entrepreneur’s Night on 30th October 2019.
World Class Beauty Queens: What makes you stand out from all those other beautiful girls?
Yes it can be quite difficult to stand out among so many beautiful ladies during the competition. But I made my lasting impression by being the only one speaking various languages during the introduction, something that has never been attempted before.
World Class Beauty Queens: Tell us about the moment your name was called out as the winner.
When it was time to announce the winner for Mrs Elegance, call it intuition, somehow I guessed it will be me. Because oftentimes that's how friends would describe me – elegant and soft spoken.
World Class Beauty Queens: What does it mean to you to be a Beauty Queen?
To me, a beauty queen is always beautiful, both inside and out. A beauty queen would also be someone who has compassion for all living beings and want to make this world a better place to live in.
World Class Beauty Queens: How did competing in pageants helped your life?
Once an unknown girl, now many people are starting to notice who am I and I’ve gotten to know many new friends from the events I’ve attended.
World Class Beauty Queens: How did pageants helped your self-esteem and body image?
Approximately 5 years ago, I worked as a chaperone to a group of girls competing for a local beauty/modeling contest. These girls were young, beautiful and slim. I get envious and wished I could be like them. From that moment on, I set myself a goal to get in shape and improve my presentation skills. It was a 5 years journey but worth every step getting there.
World Class Beauty Queens: You are an inspiration to all the girls out there. How does it feel?
To all those who feel they can’t do it, I can tell them I’m a living testimony of someone who can do it. As long as you put your mind to it and never give in to your cravings or procrastination. Losing weight can be tough but once you get there, it’s liberating.
World Class Beauty Queens: What is your on stage strategy to win the judges over?
My advantage over the other girls is that I speak many languages, including the language where the international platform of Mrs Tourism Queen International would be held, in this case, Thailand. So I hoped that the judges would see that since I can speak Thai fluently, they would pick me as a suitable candidate to represent Malaysia in the international level.
World Class Beauty Queens: How did you prepare for your competition?
The main reason I chant lots of mantras is to help me stay calm. And many people do not know this but during the competition, it can be freezing cold. So during off-stage, I keep myself warm and wore socks underneath my long gown.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are your tips for learning better pageant walk?
Engage in a professional model to coach you. They know the right angle for you to pose and it’s crucial during the competition.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are your tips for choosing right pageant dress?
Always choose a bold colour that stands out and not colours which blends with the skin as it would add pounds on camera. Another important tip is to pick a type of dress which complements your body shape.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are your tips for winning interview?
Interviews can be nerve-wrecking but I’d suggest reading everything from daily newspapers to be up-to-date on world news and read classic stories for inspiration. There are no right and wrong answers to any questions. The judges’ main concern is to see if you are able to think on your feet.
World Class Beauty Queens: What is one mistake that you've done during competing you wish you could redo and fix it?
If I could turn back time, I would have invested my time and money to perfect my walk and poses, and hire a professional makeup artist so that she/he can enhance my features and stand out more.
World Class Beauty Queens: What other mistakes are made by girls during the contest?
Mistakes do occur in every competition, but it is how we recover from it that matters. During my competition, nothing major happened but to me, stammering or long pauses can get points deducted. So always practice in front of the mirror for perfecting that speech.
World Class Beauty Queens: Any modeling or acting experience?
So far none, but I’m hoping to land on some modeling and acting jobs in the near future.
World Class Beauty Queens: What are your plans for 2020 as a Queen?
The year 2019, ended off with a bang for me. I was super busy and being invited to many events is one of its perks. As for year 2020, I see myself being involved more into charity and I hope I can make a difference to girls who wish to live their life with dreams similar to mine. It would also be the year to spread my wings to an international market.
World Class Beauty Queens: What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?
I would like people to remember me as someone who made the change. I want them to remember me, the person before competition and after. Whatever shortcomings most people have, I’ve had it too. Those who think they’re not good enough, not confident enough, not pretty enough, not tall enough… all that can change but the change must begin with own self.
