World Class Beauty Queens: Hello Jennifer, thank you for taking the time to Interview with us. Tell us about your title and what the system is about.

I won the title of 2015 Miss Friendship Ambassador of Chicago. It is a pageant hosted by the Chicago Chinatown Chamber of Commerce and TVB from Hong Kong. I represented Chicago to compete in the Miss Chinese International Pageant in Hong Kong. It is one of the most historical and influential pageants in Asia.

World Class Beauty Queens:  What inspired you to do pageants?

When I was a little girl I always wanted to grow up to be a beautiful, elegant and kind-hearted lady. I watched pageants in Hong Kong when I grew up and I wanted to be one of the them. I studied instruments growing up and had the opportunity to be invited to perform for a lot of the wonderful organizations in Chicago. I think it was a great opportunity for young ladies to make an impact and to help communities through their actions.

World Class Beauty Queens:  What do pageants mean to you?

It is a great way to showcase your confidence, pose and talents. It is always an amazing platform to share your passion in life and it opens many opportunities for a girl to serve her community and to help the people that are in need.

World Class Beauty Queens: What is your platform?

At the pageant, I was asked the question as to what humanitarian action I would take if I won the pageant. My answer was the help the immigrants in Chicago, especially the ones that just came to the US. As a country made of new and old immigrants,  the USA excels its way because of its diversity. I came to the US when I was eighteen to attend the Northwestern University. I had no family and no friends here in Chicago. Many people have helped me along the way. I would like to help the newcomers of this country to learn more about its culture, train for the necessary language and life skills, and stay connected to their roots. I have worked with many of the charitable organizations here in Chicago, to perform, to volunteer and to fund-raise. I hope everyone can realize their American dream.

World Class Beauty Queens: List some of your achievements you accomplished with your title.

I have performed musically around the world, traveling to cities such as New York, LA, LV, Lake Tahoe, Knoxville, Seoul, and Beijing to headline galas and concerts. I have performed at various notable venues including the Chicago Cultural Center, the Adler Planetarium and the Pritzker Pavilion. I won the first prize for the sixth annual CCTV Star of Talent Competition in the Shanghai region and received the Outstanding Overseas Musician Award by CCTV Huaren Channel in 2017. I have been invited as a judge for many local talent competitions, such as the first annual Voice of Chicago Talent Contest, the tenth and eleventh annual Voice of University of Chicago Karaoke Contest, and the eighth annual Voice of UIC Karaoke Contest.

I was interviewed by many major TV stations, for instance, CCTV China, NBC, ABC and the Style Network. Featured on numerous publications, for example, Xinhua News, People’s Daily, and Time Out Chicago, I also appeared on the magazine covers such as the Angel Rising Magazine’s October Issue. With a loyal following on various social media sites, I released my original single “Foam of the Ocean” to rave reviews, and I was chosen as the lead female singer for the official theme song “Moving as One” of the China’s Guantang Lake Tourism Zone. I was also elected as a board member for the Chinese American Museum of Chicago and an associate board member for the Vander Cook College of Music.

World Class Beauty Queens:  To those readers that are unfamiliar with your system tell us what are you being judged on?

For all beauty contest your appearance always plays a role, but it also goes beyond that. It is the way you present your self, your confidence, your pose and your elegance. Most importantly, it is what you have done for the community and what you would your contribution be if you are offered the title.

World Class Beauty Queens:  What was the most difficult part of the competition for you?

Wearing tall heels and standing there for the whole evening is definitely a challenge of every girl. One of the most difficult parts for me is the missing of my family here in Chicago. My parents are always very supportive of me but they are living in my hometown Shanghai. It is definitely difficult to see other contestants have a family to be in their support system and cheer for them at the pageant evening. However, I have many friends here that are very supportive of me and so many of them showed up that evening to help me win. I am glad that I made many friends here and the friendship is something that I would always cherish and something always means the world to me.

World Class Beauty Queens:  Tell us about your costume?

I wore a red Qipao which is a symbol of Chinese female beauty.

World Class Beauty Queens:  Who designed your costume?

It was kindly provided by the Chicago Chinatown Chamber of Commerce.

World Class Beauty Queens:  Tell us about your evening gown competition.

I wore another red evening dress.

World Class Beauty Queens:  What is your technique to connect with the judges?

Smile. Making eye contact is important.

World Class Beauty Queens:  What did you do to prepare for the striking pose?

Practice in front of the mirror. And video record when you practice.

World Class Beauty Queens:  How often did you practice your pageant walk?

I practiced a few times a day when I feel mentally and physically ready.

World Class Beauty Queens:  What does the crown symbolizes to you?

It is an honor, and it is a responsibility. It is a trust that you have earned the title to be of a voice to the community and it is a duty that it is time to be of service to the community.

World Class Beauty Queens:  What will you do with your title in 2017/2018?

I will continue to perform and make Chicago Chinatown heard and loved by more people.

World Class Beauty Queens: What is the ultimate title you would like to win.

I would like to leave a legacy that some people’s lives were made better because of me. That’d be the ultimate title for life.

World Class Beauty Queens: What legacy would you like to leave behind?

I hope I can make music that is appreciated by people. Also I hope people could be connected and be inspired this way. When I go perform in senior citizens homes, schools and re-habitation centers, I hope someone’s day was made better because of me.

In addition, as someone who came from China but studied in America,  I hope to become a facilitator in China-US exchanges.

I also want to show people that dreams can really come true if you have the courage to peruse your dreams and if you work hard everyday to realize your dreams.

World Class Beauty Queens: How did competing in pageants helped your life?

I have learned a lot through my competitions. I gained more than 25 pounds after I came to America due to stress, anxiety and bad dieting,  and I lost those weight largely because of the pageants. It was really motivating and I learned that through discipline and learning the right method, you can really achieve your goals. I have also learned a lot about the stage presence, pose, confidence and enjoying the moment as you live in it. I am appreciative of the friendship that I made among the pageant contestants, staff members and the organizers.  I also thank the many opportunities the Chicago Chinatown Chamber of Commerce and many many other organizations have provided me with post my pageant. I had the fortune of appearing at many wonderful events, for example, the Chinatown Lunar new year Parade. It was freezing cold but I couldn’t wear a hat because of the crown and my hand had no feelings after I got off the floater in about half an hour, but I felt the warmth of our people in Chicago as I still feel it today. I am forever grateful of the love and support that people gave to me. Those love and support will always become an internal inspirational for me to overcome the many more challenges and obstacles in life.
